MECnet provides a complete array of DNS (domain name system) services. Let the experienced professionals at MECnet take care of your DNS needs from registering your domain, set it up, host it and managing it. Our DNS servers are well connected to the Internet, protecting you from domain drop out if your local network is unavailable and you host your own domain.
DNS is a service that translates from the Internet site names you know and understand, e.g. www.apple.com to an IP address e.g. 17.112.152.32. Without DNS, you would have to remember the IP address of any server on the Internet that you wanted to contact. Since there are over a billion IP addresses, this could become a challenge. DNS is like having automated directory assistance at your service.
When you register a Internet domain you need a Primary DNS server to "host" the domain. Every time someone tries to contact a host in your domain, the Primary DNS server (or a cache) is contacted for information, in particular the IP address, about the host. As part of MECnet's Wrap Around Service, we provide complete Primary DNS hosting for your domain. You can request changes to your DNS configuration quickly and easily by emailing
support@mecnet.net.
Various configuration options exist with DNS. "A" records, point hostnames to any static IP address in your network. For example, MECnet can setup and point an "A" record "yourdomain.com" to a web server IP address "1.2.3.4" We can also create as many CNAME records as you want to point to a hostname "A" record. For example "www" can point to "yourdomain.com". This way anyone who would like to reach your web server can enter www.yourdomain.com in his or her browser.
MX Pointing: MX or Mail eXchanger records reference the location of a mail server associated with your domain name. MECnet will point an MX record to the hostname where your mail server is located.
These are the very basics of DNS. If you are new to DNS we suggest you try looking up DNS and BIND on the Internet and become familiar with the terminology. As always you can contact MECnet and we will be happy to explain what you need, just tell us what you want to happen and we will setup DNS appropriately.
