Error Messages
Error messages are listed in bold red text. The description of the error message is listed in black text. If you have an error message on the monitor and would like to know what it means, send us an e-mail.
eth0: Promiscuous mode enabled.
device eth0 entered promiscuous mode
device eth0 left promiscuous mode

This message indicates that a technician was looking at your network traffic using a small utility application like IPTRAF and/or tcpdump on your Joebox. This is normal if you have a ticket opened with MECnet. Our technicians use these utility programs for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Q: What's the best way to reboot the Joebox?
    A: MECnet highly recommends not rebooting the Joebox unless asked to by a HelpDesk representative, or by a network technician. Rebooting the Joebox overwrites all the log and debugging information that we need in order to troubleshoot most to all issues.
    If you are rebooting the Joebox frequently, please notify us so we can assist in troubleshooting the issue.

  • Q: What's the best way to shutdown the Joebox?
    A: If you need to shutdown the Joebox for network maintenance, etc., you can login into the Web Management Interface, click on "System", click on "Uptime & Power", and then click "Shutdown".
  • Q: Can you block the various instant messaging programs?
    A: Yes, the Joebox Layer-7 Packet Classifier will block Instant Messenger traffic. Please refer to your Joebox Manual or call the HelpDesk for assistance.
  • Q: Can you block Kazaa and/or other file sharing applications?
    A: Yes, the Joebox Layer-7 Packet Classifier will block Peer-to-Peer sharing traffic. Please refer to your Joebox Manual or call the HelpDesk for assistance.
